Looking for Advice on My Next Computer Purchase

My boss is getting me a new computer, and I need some help deciding. I've been using both Linux and Windows machines for the last five years, and while I like my Lenovo Yoga, it's just not keeping up anymore. I often work with medium-sized files (around 500 MB), and I'll be using software like ArcGIS, Kingdom Geoscience, and Python. Since I'm not too familiar with computer specs, I'm hoping to get something with plenty of RAM—ideally 64 GB, but I'd be okay with 32 GB if needed. As for storage, I'm having trouble finding anything over 1 TB at the moment. Right now, I'm considering a V10 Surface, but I'm also open to building my own computer. However, I'm not sure what parts to choose besides the RAM and storage. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you're concerned about storage, going for external drives might be the way to go. I store a lot of videos myself, and 8 TB fills up quickly. Being able to swap out drives easily is super helpful too!

Just a heads up, you can’t really build a laptop, but you can configure or upgrade some parts. If the RAM isn’t soldered, you might be able to upgrade it, and the same goes for the NVMe drive. For higher performance, you may want to consider a desktop, but since you need portability, a laptop is your best bet.

Yeah, I get what you mean about upgrading rather than building. Since I'm working from home half the week, I really need something portable. Right now, my current machine has only 8 GB of RAM, and I use an external hard drive for additional storage but, man, does everything take forever to run.

Framework laptops are worth looking into if you want something customizable. They let you switch out parts easily, which is as close as you’ll get to building a laptop!

A T14 is a solid choice! It’s lightweight yet powerful, perfect for your needs. You’d be set up nicely with that one!

Have you thought about getting a used ThinkPad? They’re reliable and can be found at decent prices. Plus, ThinkPads are generally great for productivity software like the ones you’re planning to use.
