We're currently using an on-prem Barracuda Message Archiver appliance, but we're considering ditching the hardware. We've looked into the Barracuda Cloud Archiving service as a potential replacement. Since our mail accounts are through Microsoft 365 Business Premium, I'm curious if there's something within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem that could provide similar functionality. Any suggestions or insights would be appreciated!

If you're using Microsoft 365, you can indeed enable archiving in Exchange Online. It's set up per mailbox, so new mailboxes can have it turned on by default, and it's pretty easy to script it for existing ones using PowerShell. This feature allows each user to access their own archive folder securely, and it integrates well with retention policies, which can automatically move emails to the archive based on certain criteria. However, I have to warn you—using eDiscovery in Purview can be really slow and cumbersome. I still find myself missing the old Barracuda service, to be honest.
We transitioned from an on-prem setup to Barracuda's cloud archiver about four years ago, and it's been great! We managed to migrate all our archived data over to the cloud without any issues. Plus, we're also using their spam filtering and backup solutions with Microsoft 365, and I've been really happy with all of it.
