Hey everyone! I recently took on the role of IT Manager at a small mechanical and specialty vehicle shop with around 100 employees. We're currently using QuickBooks on-premise, but the company file size has ballooned to 2.6 GB and we're looking for alternatives, especially since QuickBooks Online doesn't seem like a fit for us. Our setup involves a local server hosting QuickBooks and employees accessing it remotely via an RDS server.
I'd love to get advice on what other accounting software options we might consider, or if we should stick with hosting QuickBooks on a cloud platform. I'm not an accounting whiz and haven't handled migrations from QuickBooks to other products before, so I'd appreciate any guidance you can offer. What alternatives do you recommend? Also, if we decide to stay with QuickBooks for now, what's a solid way to host it? I've heard about Azure Desktop through Nerdio—any thoughts?

We’ve been happy with Rightworks for hosting QuickBooks for the last 8-10 years. They've been reliable, and I think they’d be a solid option for your remote work needs as well. Plus, they keep things running smoothly, so we’ve had zero complaints.
Just a heads up—make sure to consult with your accountant, whether they're internal or external. If things don’t go well with the transition or if the accounting team isn’t satisfied, you could find yourself in hot water, especially as a new hire. Get insights from someone experienced in this area before making a big switch.
Absolutely, I'll emphasize that this isn’t my area of expertise. I plan to involve an outside consultant to collaborate with the finance team during this potential transition.
From what I've seen in the field, QuickBooks can start to feel pretty limited once your revenue goes over the $2 million mark. Some popular alternatives include Acumatica, Intacct, and Sage 100. If you’re considering a cloud solution, Microsoft Dynamics and Sage 500 (hosted via Azure Virtual Desktop) are also good options. However, it’s crucial to clearly outline your business's needs first—are you looking for inventory management, billing features, etc.? Create a requirements document, then consult with ERP vendors to find a solution that fits your business.
Any recommendations for specific ERP resellers that could help us navigate this process?
I'll definitely check them out! Does it allow multiple users to work remotely without issues?
