Looking for Budget Laptop Options to Switch to Linux

Hey everyone! I've been contemplating the switch to Linux for a while now since I've heard great things about its privacy and security features. The thing is, I'm not very tech-savvy and don't know where to begin with finding a budget-friendly laptop under $400. Also, I'm curious about how to install Linux and which version I should choose. I've got a particular interest in playing GTA games, especially GTA 4, on it. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks! 🙂

Stick with a 'kicked-to-the-curb' laptop or PC—there's a lot of good Microsoft e-waste out there that works perfectly fine with Linux! I picked up my old laptop for free back in 2017, upgraded it slightly, and it runs great with Linux. The best part? I didn’t even have to reinstall Linux—just swapped an SSD from another machine!

Look for a cheap used laptop with as much RAM and storage as you can find. Just a heads-up—ram prices have shot up lately due to demand from AI data centers and crypto, so upgrading an old laptop's RAM might cost more than the laptop itself!

Linux Mint is definitely the go-to distro for beginners, and a lot of experienced users love it too. It's based on Ubuntu, which is quite popular, especially in corporate settings. If you’re considering buying new, Dell sometimes sells computers with Ubuntu pre-installed, and there’s a lot of documentation for their models, which could be useful for you!

If you already have a cheap old laptop, why not just install Linux on it? Just avoid anything too outdated since many websites have become quite resource-heavy. An adblocker can help speed things up too. This advice works for browsing in Windows as well!

Honestly, you can probably pick up an old laptop and still run Linux just fine! If you have a computer already, just install Linux on it. If not, check eBay or Craigslist for something from the last 5-10 years. Used laptops generally have better specs for the money than new ones. For gaming, the integrated graphics are okay, but you might run into issues with older Nvidia cards. GTA 4 isn’t super demanding, so you should be good with decent integrated graphics.

For a budget laptop, I’d suggest looking for a used office-grade machine like a ThinkPad or a Dell Latitude. Just make sure it has at least 8GB of RAM and a decent SSD, preferably 256GB or more. If you want to play GTA 4 smoothly, hunting for a used gaming laptop could also be a good idea. As for Linux, I recommend starting with Mint—it's great for beginners!
