Looking for Creative Interview Ideas for IT Support Roles

I'm searching for innovative ways to interview candidates for an L1/L2 IT support position at a small manufacturing company. I want to assess skills like problem-solving, working without standard operating procedures, lateral thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication with both technical and non-technical staff (office employees and factory workers). Traditional technical questions often fail to show if someone can handle unfamiliar challenges or explain complex tech concepts to non-tech users. I'm interested in hands-on assessments that mimic real workplace scenarios. What unique tests have you implemented or seen that truly reveal a candidate's problem-solving process and teaching skills? I'd love ideas for 15-20 minute exercises that illustrate how they think under pressure and adapt to unexpected situations.

I think it's a great idea to test problem-solving skills in real-time! Instead of having them use a 3D printer directly, how about you set up a simulation? For example, tell them to imagine they’ve received a call about a machine not powering on. Have them walk you through their troubleshooting process in that scenario.

Also, maybe consult your current L2 staff for insights on common issues, so you can tailor problems that they’ll likely face. This could lead to some insightful responses!

Honestly, if candidates are put off by tests, maybe they aren't the right fit. It's important to ensure they can handle real-world challenges, but I get how stressful it can be for applicants.

It's crucial to avoid overwhelming them right away with complicated tasks, but maybe consider some basic troubleshooting scenarios instead. You could also ask them to explain a concept like troubleshooting to someone who doesn't have a tech background to gauge their communication skills.
