Looking for Free Alternatives to Steps Recorder

Hey everyone! I'm on the hunt for a substitute for Steps Recorder that mimics its functionality. I need something that can thoroughly document each step and capture exactly what the cursor is doing, similar to how Steps Recorder operates. I've come across suggestions like Clipchamp and Snipping Tool, but those only seem to record video, which isn't what I need. After some Googling, I found a few paid options, but I'm trying to stick to free or open-source solutions. Anyone have any recommendations for something that works well? I often help friends with computer issues, and Steps Recorder would be a huge time-saver for me!

Have you tried Scribe? They do have a free version, but fair warning, it only works with web apps. Still, it's an option if you’re mostly working online.

Thanks for the tip! I checked them out, but unfortunately, I need something that works outside the browser as well.

I’ve seen others mention this tool too! It does seem interesting.

How about ScreentoGIF? It's free and allows you to record everything while highlighting actions. Plus, it has editing options for adding text afterwards, which might do the trick for you.

This sounds promising! I’ll try using GIFs to demonstrate things quickly.

Try using SnagIt, Greenshot, or even Camtasia if you have it. PowerPoint’s screen capture option is also pretty handy and is what MS support tends to use, but it mostly captures video rather than adding text.

Are you talking about the Snipping Tool? When I tried it, it only recorded video. I’ll give Greenshot and Camtasia a shot, though.
