I've been using Intel NUCs since the 2010s, really liking their compact size and quiet operation. Recently, we tried out the latest NUC15 but noticed that the fan gets pretty loud when the CPU usage exceeds 50%, even with the BIOS set to 'whisper' mode. I'm concerned that if we switch to them completely, we might end up fielding lots of noise complaints. We also tried the Lenovo ThinkCentre M70q Gen 5, but it got just as loud, if not louder.
I'm looking for recommendations for small, business-compatible mini PCs with the latest CPUs that can operate quietly—similar to older NUCs. Are the noise levels just a trade-off due to the latest high-performance CPUs, or is there a hidden gem out there that can meet our criteria? I love the convenience of mini PCs for office work, but I really don't want to compromise on noise levels. Let me know if I'm missing something!

We found that fanless models don’t perform as well under load compared to units with low-speed fans. We used to rely heavily on NUCs but experienced fan failures often. If you're looking for something quieter and more reliable, you'll have to explore options beyond just the latest Intel CPUs.
I’m surprised you’ve been using NUCs for business; they aren’t really designed for that purpose. Consider larger form factors for better cooling.
Currently trying out a GMKTec NucBox M6 with a Ryzen 6. It's relatively quiet and the price was reasonable. The fan can get a bit loud at startup but is quiet most of the time, even under load, which has peaked at around 35% for me. What are people doing that spikes CPU over 50%?
I’ve got a few MelE Mini PCs that have been pretty quiet for basic tasks. They’ve been working fine for three years now, though I did lose one after a couple. If you're just displaying web pages, they could be a good option.
Unfortunately, you can expect small PCs to have louder fans due to their size. I would suggest looking for larger units if you want quieter operation.
NUCs aren’t really considered business-class machines. You might want to check out HP Elite Minis or Dell Micros. I've used both types extensively in a large company setting - they're solid and hold up well under pressure.
We use Dell Optiplex 3050s—they're pretty quiet and perform decently. Plus, the mounting options are great! My favorite is the monitor mount that fits right between the stand and the monitor.
Yes! That mounting option keeps things looking clean and organized, I love it!
For a quieter setup, HP Pro 400 G9 mini units are worth checking out. They manage noise well.
Mac mini units are pretty quiet, but they're macOS-only, which won't work for many businesses.
I've had good luck with the HP Elite Mini G9 series. They're consistently quiet and also pack a punch. Dell’s mini options are commendable too.
I haven't found Dell Optiplex micros to be loud at all. They’ve worked great in our quieter office.
But 3050s are outdated. What other models are you looking at that can run Windows 11?
