Looking to Switch to Linux: Gameplay and Office Requirements

I'm fed up with Microsoft and Google's bloatware and want to explore Linux as a potential full-time operating system. I'm mainly searching for a Linux distribution that supports gaming and can run an Office suite, as I'll need that soon. I've heard of options like Bazzite, SteamOS, and PopOS, but I'm unsure what to choose since I'm not very familiar with Linux. I'd rather get insights from experienced users than spend hours reading documentation. Any recommendations?

Take a look at the distro selection page for tailored choices. And remember, create regular backups! Testing in a virtual machine can also help you get a feel for things without fully committing.

Before picking a distro, it'd be helpful to know your hardware specs. That way, we can recommend the best fit for you!

I've got an AMD 5600G processor and a GTX 1650 Super. Planning to upgrade soon as it's starting to lag.

If you're open to experimentation, check out Bazzite, CachyOS, Linux Mint, and maybe even NixOS – it's quite unique! Each offers something different, and I switched from Windows to Linux back in May, and I'm loving it!

I just want basic functionalities like gaming and browsing. Bazzite keeps coming up in discussions, and it looks nice!

Gaming has come a long way on Linux, but there are still some hurdles. Modern games run well with compatibility layers like Proton, but older titles can be hit or miss. Be sure to check compatibility databases.

I play mostly lower-demand games that are recognized on Steam's compatibility list, so I think it’ll be fine. What about using Office? Are there ways to run it even if I'm against giving more money to Microsoft?

You can run Windows apps on Linux through WINE. I’d suggest Pop!_OS for gaming since it comes with Nvidia drivers, which can really help if you're using an Nvidia card. Bootable flash drives are handy for testing.

My friend told me to try it in a VM before going all-in... is doing a clean install really that risky?
