Looking to Upgrade My AM4 CPU and GPU – Need Advice

Hey everyone! Recently, a friend gave me his old PC since he upgraded, and while I've had PCs before, it's been a while since I tinkered with one. Here's what I've got: a Ryzen 7 2700, Asus Prime B450-F Gaming, 16GB DDR4 3200 RAM, a 1TB SATA SSD (WD Blue I think), a GTX 1080ti, and a Corsair TX-M 650W power supply all housed in a Corsair Spec DELTA RGB case.

I'm thinking of investing some money to upgrade because the CPU seems to struggle with most of the games I want to play. I'm looking to play a mix of older games like Ghost Recon Wildlands, Bioshock, Batman Arkham, and RDR, along with some newer single-player titles and Overwatch. Plus, I'm planning to get a 1440p 144Hz IPS monitor.

With a budget of around £700, what do you all think would be the best upgrade path? I've been eyeing a Ryzen 5 5600 with a 5060ti or possibly a 5700x3d if I'm willing to spend a bit more. One thing to note is that the motherboard is stuck in the case; the screws just spin around, but I can access the backplate. Thanks a lot for your help!

For upgrading your CPU and cooler, you might need to replace the backplate, but since your case allows access, that's not too big of a problem. I think going with a 5700X or the X3D paired with a 60ti would be a solid choice! If you're considering the 5700X, it’s around £120, and the 5700X3D is about £200. I'd say the X3D is worth the investment for better performance, especially for newer games!

That's great to hear! If I can work around the motherboard issue, I'll definitely consider the X3D for the extra performance. Thanks for the suggestion!

If you're thinking about performance-to-cost, the 5600, 5700, and 5800 variants (non-X/X/XT) offer great value for money, but the 5700X3D really shines for AM4 setups. Regarding the stuck screws you mentioned, if they've fused to the standoffs, you might be able to slightly loosen them and then lift the motherboard out. In that case, using some needle nose pliers might help to stabilize the standoff while you twist the screw free. Good luck with the upgrade!
