Making the Switch from MSP to City IT: What to Expect?

After spending 22 years as a self-employed IT professional and 3 years as a Level 2 Engineer at a small MSP, I'm excited to start a new chapter as an IT Systems Analyst for a city government next week. I'm looking for insights from anyone who has made a similar switch or has experience working in government IT. What are some of the major differences I should anticipate compared to the MSP world? Any general advice for someone stepping into this new environment? I'd really appreciate any tips! Thanks!

One big thing to keep in mind is that things tend to move at a much slower pace in the public sector. You might want to mentally prepare for timelines that could stretched beyond your expectations – if you think something might take a while, it could take even longer! But on the flip side, enjoy the benefits that come with government jobs, like solid health insurance. Just try to adapt to the slower pace without getting frustrated. And don’t underestimate the importance of soft skills—politics will be a factor, so working on those can help you a lot.

Just remember, unless you're in a toxic environment, this could be a better gig than what you had at the MSP!

So true! Plus, in my experience, city budgets can be tough. You'll often find yourself working with finances that seem tight, and getting approval for budget increases can take forever. So, plan ahead for what you’ll need, sometimes up to a year out. It's all about understanding how your work impacts the community and convincing the council why it matters—keep your opinions in check if they're controversial, since politics play a big role.
