I've been struggling with my computer randomly shutting off for over a year now, and I'm running out of ideas on what to try next. Here's a breakdown of what I've done so far: I've replaced the power supply with a Seasonic TX-1300, swapped out the motherboard for a Phantom Gaming x870E Nova Wifi, changed the CPU to a 9800x3D, tried different RAM, and even upgraded to an Intel setup with a 265K + Z890 Aorus Elite Wifi Ice along with new RAM. I've also changed the video card to a Sapphire Radeon RX 6800 and replaced the SSDs, refreshing Windows each time. I've even unplugged various peripherals to see if they might be causing the issue, but so far, only my Logitech G502 Hero remains connected during the shutdowns. To protect against power issues, I've been using an Eaton 1500 RTXL2U online UPS.
I really doubt this is related to overheating since I've run various hardware and stress tests overnight without significant issues. While the computer has turned off a couple of times during testing, it's not consistent. These shutdowns happen sporadically—sometimes weeks apart and at other times multiple times in quick succession. When my computer shuts off, it's like someone pulled the power plug, and I hear a brief noise in my headphones. The behavior varies between AMD and Intel setups: on the AMD board, it stays off until I reset the power, whereas on the Intel board, it tries to restart immediately after a power loss.
Here's my current setup:
- Gigabyte Z890 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 ICE
- Intel Core Ultra 7 265K
- Crucial 64GB Desktop DDR5 5600 MHz UDIMM
- Seasonic TX-1300
- EVGA 3090
- 980 PRO 1TB, 9100 PRO 2TB
I would really appreciate any suggestions or insights on what else I could check! Thanks!

I'd really advise checking the connection for any grounding issues. Sometimes, if the motherboard contacts with screw threads in the case, it can cause boots to fail or random shutoffs. Just a little odd behavior on hardware can lead to that kind of problem.
After swapping out so much gear, it might still be an issue with your power source. Try plugging into a different outlet or see if a different UPS helps—sometimes it's about finding that one specific location that works right!
What about trying it out at a different location? There might be an issue with the electrical supply in your house. Sometimes power surges or dips can cause shutoffs that don’t trigger the UPS. Just be careful, it's a pain to pinpoint if it's occasional or intermittent.
Have you checked your case for possible shorts? Double-check that the power button isn't stuck or wired incorrectly. Sometimes the power button can accidentally short out if held down for too long, leading to spontaneous shutoffs. If you’ve swapped cases already, make sure the standoffs are set correctly to prevent any contact with the motherboard.
Thanks for the suggestion! I did swap the case (now using a Fractal Design Meshify 3 XL) and also have the front IO disconnected. I've looked at the standoffs and they seem alright, but I’ll take another look.

I suspect that might be it too, which is why I got the online UPS—it's supposed to handle any consistency issues since it constantly supplies power. Still, testing somewhere else might help to rule out my home's power as the issue.
