My Computer Won’t Start and I Don’t Want to Lose My Files – What Can I Do?

Hey everyone! I'm facing a major issue with my MSI Bravo 15 C7U laptop running Windows 11. My computer won't start up and I keep getting a blue screen with troubleshooting options. I've tried a bunch of solutions, but they all lead to that dreaded 'can't do that' message. The only option I haven't tried yet is resetting the system, but that requires wiping everything, which I really want to avoid since I don't have any backups. It's telling me I need to free up space on the drive where Windows is installed. Is there any way around this? I'd appreciate any tips or advice you might have!

Another option is booting from a live Linux distro. You can use it to access your files without having to boot into Windows. Just connect a USB hard drive, and you should be able to copy your important files over. Just follow a guide on how to do that; it’s usually quite straightforward!

How do I save the files, though?

If you're comfortable with it, you could try rebuilding the boot partition using a USB drive, but if you don't have a USB handy, that's a problem. Just let me know if you need a step-by-step; it can be tricky, but there are good guides on YouTube that walk you through it!

I don’t have a USB drive, or at least not one ready to help with rebooting.

You might want to try getting dump files from your bluescreen errors. If you can access Windows, even in Safe Mode, check the C:WindowsMinidump folder for any crash logs. These files can really help diagnose what went wrong. If you find some, zip them up and upload to a file-sharing site like mediafire.com or catbox.moe. Multiple dump files are better for diagnosis, so if there aren’t many, at least upload what you have. You might need to tweak your settings to ensure new dump files are created, like changing to a Small Memory Dump.

Got it, I'll check that out! Thanks!
