Hey everyone! I got a PC upgrade recently thanks to a friend, who switched out my graphics card, power supply, and boosted my RAM. He also reapplied thermal paste, and now my computer runs way better. However, I noticed that my CPU is hitting a scorching 100 degrees Celsius during gaming, and these are games I used to run just fine before the upgrade. I'm wondering if I need to invest in a better cooler or if there's something else going on. Here are my specs for context:
- CPU: Intel Core i7-8700 3.20GHz
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700XT Sapphire Pulse
- Motherboard: ASRock B360M Xtreme
- CPU Cooler: Intel E97379-003
Any advice would be super appreciated!

If you just upgraded hardware, it’s possible not all connections were secured properly. Make sure the CPU cooler is properly attached and that fans are working efficiently. Check your airflow inside the case too. Sometimes, poor airflow can lead to overheating. Just make sure that hot air is being expelled well!
It sounds like the upgrades are really pushing your CPU, especially with the new GPU being more demanding. I’d suggest starting by ensuring that the cooler is mounted correctly and that the thermal paste was applied evenly. If it was done properly, then getting a better cooler might be the way to go since your current one is a bit dated. Considering the CPU's age, you might need to consider a future upgrade anyway!
Yeah, if you've repasted it and it's still hitting those temps, a better cooler would definitely be a good investment.
Honestly, if your cooler is one of those small stock ones, it doesn’t surprise me that it’s overheating. You might want to consider a more powerful cooler that fits in your case. Measure your clearance and look for better options that can fit. It could make a big difference!
I've got some space for bigger coolers, so that's good to know!
Thanks for the tip! I will check all of that out right away.
