My Ethernet is stuck at 100mbps – should I replace my motherboard?

Hey everyone! I'm having a frustrating issue with my Ethernet speeds. My motherboard is a GIGABYTE B650M AORUS ELITE AX, and I usually get download speeds of around 600-700mbps. Recently, however, my speeds have dropped to under 100mbps.

I've done some testing with the help of linemen:
1. Switched cables from my modem to my laptop and got 600mbps, so the cable is fine.
2. I also connected my LAN cable behind my PC to my laptop and got 600mbps there too, confirming that it's not the cable at fault.

It seems like my LAN port is the issue because when I checked the Aggregated Link Speed, it showed 100/100mbps, and the speed in the network settings also indicates 100.0 mbps.

I've tried a bunch of troubleshooting steps, like switching 'Speed & Duplex' settings, resetting network settings, and running several commands, but nothing worked. My question now is whether there's anything else I can do before deciding to replace the entire motherboard. It's still under warranty, but that would mean disassembling my setup, which is a pain since my case is small (Jonsbo Z20). A bit annoyed since my PC is only 3-4 months old.

Thanks for any help you can offer! Check out my EDIT for the resolution that eventually worked for me!

Sounds like you're jumping to conclusions about the LAN port. Before doing anything drastic, try testing with a different short cable, just to eliminate any weird specs. You might also want to connect your laptop directly to the PC to simplify the testing process.

You definitely don't need to replace your motherboard just yet! A much easier solution would be to grab a cheap PCIe network card. They can be really affordable, around $20-25 for a 2.5gb adapter. Here's one option I found on Amazon: TRENDnet 2.5G Ethernet Adapter.

If space is tight, consider a USB Ethernet adapter, though they might add a bit of latency. Still, it's a quick fix without the hassle of replacing the whole board!

The problem is that with my case being small, there's barely room to add a PCIe card. I’m also worried about using a USB adapter because of potential latency issues. I really want to optimize my setup since I game and stream a lot.

Have you checked your drivers? Sometimes just updating or uninstalling and reinstalling can fix these types of issues, so it’s worth a shot!
