My GTX 1080 Died After 7 Years! What Should I Replace It With?

Hey everyone, my trusty GTX 1080 has finally kicked the bucket after almost 7 years of daily use. It won't display anything anymore when I try to use DisplayPort on the GPU. I'm now on the hunt for a replacement that can keep up with my current setup for a bit longer before I do a complete overhaul. I'm considering getting a RTX 5070 for about $575. My goal is to extend my gaming rig for around another 5 years or so. I usually play esports shooters and single-player AAA adventure games, and I don't require ultra settings, as evidenced by my 8-year-old setup. I play on a 1440p, 144hz monitor.

Here's my current setup:
- CPU: i7 8700k 3.7GHz
- Motherboard: Z370 Aorus Gaming 5
- GPU: EVGA GTX 1080
- RAM: G.Skill 16GB DDR4 - 3200

From what I've read, I'm looking at either the 5070 for $575, the 5070ti for $800, or the 9070xt for $750. I'm concerned about potential bottlenecking with my CPU if I go for a more powerful GPU. Is it worth investing in a higher-end card for my situation? Also, I'm considering adding another 16GB of RAM since prices are quite reasonable now. Thanks for any advice!

If you're gaming at 1440p, I'd recommend going for the 9070. Avoid NVIDIA's cards with VRAM limitations – they tend to be less future-proof.

It really comes down to what games you're playing and at what settings. The 10 series is starting to fall behind for AAA games. If I were you, I'd wait and upgrade everything when you're ready – don’t want to waste the potential of whatever new GPU you buy if your other parts can’t keep up.

My gaming includes Apex, Halo, and titles like Alan Wake 2 and Witcher at 1440p, mostly on low settings.

I made a similar jump, moving from a 1080ti to a 4070ti. Going to a 5070 should give you a significant performance boost – like, around 120% compared to your 1080. It's a great upgrade that can keep you gaming happily for a longer time, especially with newer titles coming out.

Yeah, but that 4070ti is super pricey at over $1100. The 5070 is around $550, and seems like a better value for what you need right now.

Why not grab a used 3070 or 3080? They can be way cheaper than the new cards you're looking at, and they're still a solid upgrade from the 1080. I went from a 1080 to a 3080 and I'm really happy with it – can run everything at ultra on my 3440x1440 monitor!

I haven't considered used cards yet. A used 3070 is going for about $300. Any good places to look for those?
