My HDD Disappeared After Using Data Recovery Tool – Any Fixes?

I recently tried using TestDisk to recover some lost data from my hard drive, and I think I might have messed up the settings by trying to recover a missing drive. I managed to find my "D" HDD with the software, but it didn't retrieve the data I was looking for. Since then, I've noticed that the "D" drive is often missing from my system, and I've had to go into disk management just to assign it a letter again. I even formatted my PC and did a clean install of Windows 10, but the issue persists. What could be causing this to happen?

You mentioned the drive shows up in Disk Management, but if it’s just showing as raw, that’s a bit concerning. Sounds like the drive is having trouble recognizing its own file system. Even with a fresh Windows install, the same issues can carry over if the drive itself has problems. Some users opt for software to fix raw drives, but be careful; it can sometimes make things worse. Have you thought about backing up whatever you can from that drive and maybe replacing it?

It sounds frustrating! Have you checked if the drive appears in Disk Management? Sometimes after a data recovery attempt, drives can show up as raw or have other file system issues. If it does show up, that's a good sign! You might want to look into whether there’s a deeper issue with the drive itself. It’s possible that the recovery tool messed with the drive’s partitioning. If you're not getting anywhere, consider reaching out to a data recovery professional—it's usually the safest bet for important files.
