I encountered a problem with my laptop yesterday. I was able to log in, but then the screen went black after I pressed space to enter my password. After waiting, I tried to power it off and on again, but now the power button lights up, yet there's no sound, no fan activity, and the screen remains off. Even when I press the power button again, it won't turn off. The battery seems to still be supplying power to external devices. Should I just wait for the battery to drain completely?

It sounds like your laptop might be stuck or experiencing a power issue. Instead of waiting for the battery to die—since that could take a while—try doing this:
1. Disconnect everything from your laptop.
2. Hold the power button down for 30-40 seconds to discharge any residual power.
3. Wait for a full minute, then plug in just the charger.
4. Try powering it on normally.
If it still doesn’t work, you can try holding the power button for 60 seconds followed by plugging the charger back in and waiting 10 seconds before powering on. This usually helps reset the internal power options. Let me know how it goes!
I tried those steps, and unfortunately, nothing changed. The caps lock and num lock LEDs aren't responding at all, and this is an HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-dk2093ne.
You can also try the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + B. It sometimes helps recover from a black screen issue, but given your laptop isn’t responsive, it might not register the input right now.
You could try leaving it off with the power light on, but not plugged in. Letting the battery drain might reset it, but it's a slow approach. If you're in a hurry, connect an external device to speed up the draining process.
I hooked up some rechargeable batteries to help drain it faster, just in case!

Great tips! Also, if you're unsure how old the laptop is, check if it's still under warranty. It might also help to connect an external monitor to see if the issue is with the built-in display.
