My PC is Lagging—Could It Be a CPU Issue?

Hey everyone, I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to PCs and I could really use some help. I recently built a PC with an i7 processor, a 3060 GPU, 1TB SSD, and 16GB RAM, which I thought were good specs based on what I've read. I've been playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on ultra settings without any issues for about a month, but suddenly the game started lagging really badly. I've tried updating Nvidia, Windows, and switched to ultra performance mode, but nothing seems to work. A friend suggested the problem might relate to the CPU, but I have no clue how to access it for troubleshooting. If anyone could guide me step-by-step, maybe on Discord, that would be awesome. Thanks!

First off, just a heads-up about your i7—Intel releases different versions every year, so saying 'i7' isn't very specific. It'd help to find out exactly which model you have. This could really affect performance!

How do I check what model it is? Sorry, I’m still learning!

It sounds like you’ve done a lot of troubleshooting already. Have you tried plugging your PC into a different outlet? Also, check the connections for the CPU on the motherboard. Make sure no wires are corroded or damaged. Do you see any debug lights on the motherboard when you power it on?

I'll try another outlet, but I haven't seen any lights. I'm also asking around for help on how to take things apart to check for rust, but it’s tough finding info.

Make sure your CPU cooler is clear of dust and functioning properly. My CPU was throttling down to low speeds because the cooler was clogged. If you have a desktop, just open it up and check for dust buildup. If it’s a laptop, you might have a dead fan that could require a bit more work.

I have a desktop—not a laptop!
