My PC Keeps Shutting Off During Heavy Gaming Sessions – Help!

Hey everyone! So I recently upgraded my CPU from a Ryzen 5 3600 to a Ryzen 7 5800XT, and now my PC shuts off after about 5-10 minutes of playing demanding games, especially 'The Finals'. It seems to run fine on less stressful games, but I'm really puzzled by this issue. I initially thought it was my power supply, a basic Thermaltake Smart 600W, which I replaced with an AsRock 850W 80+ Bronze certified PSU, but the problem continues. CPU and GPU temps are around 70°C under heavy load, and my motherboard hovers at about 45°C. Oddly, when I remove the side panel of my case, it either doesn't shut down or takes much longer to do so, which makes me suspect a temperature problem even though I'm not seeing anything alarming. I also checked the Event Viewer, and it shows a Kernel Power 41 error. Here are my specs:

- Motherboard: AsRock B450M R4.0 (latest BIOS update)
- RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 1600MHz
- CPU: Ryzen 7 5800XT (with Wraith Prism cooler)
- GPU: Nvidia RTX 2070 8GB
- Case: Fractal Meshify.

I had a similar issue with a 650W PSU and B450M setup after upgrading. If turning off 'CBP' in the BIOS helps, you could go that route—even if it means sacrificing some performance. A lot of people argue it's either the PSU or VRM causing these restarts.

I’ll definitely look into that, thanks! I want to avoid any further upgrades if I can help it.

Just a heads-up, in my experience, similar issues have arisen from faulty M.2 drives. You might want to check that too.

It sounds like overheating might be the culprit. Have you checked if your CPU is actually overheating?

Yeah, I'm monitoring temps and they look fine, but I’ll keep a closer eye in case something changes.

Don't forget to double-check if you applied thermal paste when you upgraded the CPU. If you didn't, that could lead to overheating issues.

I did put fresh Arctic MX6 on it. My idle temp is around 62°C, so I doubt that's the problem.

First off, that RAM speed seems pretty slow for the 5800XT; ideally, you'd want faster RAM for optimal performance. Also, make sure all cables—especially the CPU power cable—are correctly plugged in. If you still have the old CPU, comparing the temps might give you clues, too. And hey, sometimes a new CPU can just be a dud.

It’s true about the RAM. I didn’t realize the effect clock speeds would have, but thanks for the advice. And good idea about checking the cables!

Regarding the RAM, it's DDR4, which can trick some tools into displaying lower speeds, but it should actually be functioning at double those numbers.

If your temps aren’t high, it could be a power issue. I’d recommend replacing the PSU if that’s still an area of doubt for you.

Have you tried resetting the BIOS to factory settings? Sometimes that can fix weird issues after a hardware upgrade.

Honestly, your motherboard might be limiting the CPU's performance. Consider investing in a decent B550 motherboard that can handle the load better. A good one typically costs around $100.
