My PC Won’t Start After Upgrading to Ryzen 5 5500

I've been struggling with my PC after upgrading the processor. Currently, I have a Gigabyte GA-A320M-S2H motherboard, an RX 590 video card, and initially, a Ryzen 3 2200G CPU. I recently purchased a Ryzen 5 5500 processor and followed the steps to install it, but my PC won't boot. I learned that I needed to update the BIOS, which I did, but even after the update to version f54, I couldn't get any display with the new CPU. I tried putting the old CPU back in, but now there's still no image. I've done a lot of searching online, but nothing has worked so far.

It sounds like your motherboard just might not support the Ryzen 5000 series despite the BIOS update. Some A320 boards are finicky and won’t POST with those CPUs, even with the latest BIOS. A good first step is to reflash the BIOS with the old CPU still in place and don't forget to clear the CMOS after updating.

I get that! How would I check the BIOS settings if there's no display though?

Clearing the CMOS might help; some people have had luck with it, but be careful—don’t force it. If it’s totally frozen, maybe try removing the CMOS battery for a bit?

According to the specs, your motherboard should at least recognize the Ryzen 5 5500 with a BIOS version of F55 or higher. Since you're still stuck, I'd consider testing the old CPU again just to confirm it's still functioning properly, and if possible, you might want to look into a different motherboard if the issue persists.

So you're saying if the 5500 doesn’t work, I should just get a new motherboard, right? That sounds costly!

Yeah, if it won't POST with either CPU after all this, it might be a limitation on the motherboard’s end.

I feel your pain! I had a similar experience with my rig. After the firmware craziness, it turned out to be a bad motherboard. By the way, is your RAM compatible with the new board you're considering? Double-check that.

I’m not sure about the RAM compatibility, good point! I’ll look into that.

It’s brutal losing the PC to something like that after everything you've tried. Good luck!
