Navigating a Career Change to Programming: Need Advice!

Hey everyone! I'm a 30-year-old USMC vet with three kids and a wife, currently living in Dallas. I built my first PC when I was 17 but haven't done much programming until now. I've had a GPA of around 3.0 back in my community college days before I enlisted, and after getting honorably discharged due to an ankle injury, I started using my GI Bill to return to school. I'm now enrolled at Dallas College, pursuing a Bachelor's in Applied Technology for Software Development, and my GPA is looking good at about 3.2.

Unfortunately, I'm currently unemployed, relying on disability and the GI Bill, while doing some under-the-table work. I struggle with daily tasks due to my injury, and I want to transition into a tech career. I'm taking Programming Logic, Mobile App Development, Intro to Python, and Web Design Tools this semester.

I would love to know if taking on a customer service or IT support role would be beneficial for my resume in getting a programming job in the future, or if that would just be a waste of time. I'm looking for any pointers from anyone who's been in a similar situation. Thank you!

If you can manage to get a security clearance, that could be a game-changer for you! Check if your university offers student jobs like help desk or IT support. Those positions can really highlight your troubleshooting and soft skills on your resume.
