Navigating a Career in Tech Amid AI Uncertainty: Seeking Advice

Hey everyone! I'm reaching out because I'm feeling a bit lost in my career path and could really use some guidance. I've been following the rise of AI and the discussions around job security, and it's honestly making me anxious about my future. I studied languages in college but ended up working as an IT Support Specialist, where I handle systems, networks, and help desk issues. About two years ago, I started venturing into full-stack development, focusing mainly on React/NextJS for frontend and Node/Express for backend, along with Docker and some DevOps tools.

However, as I begin applying for jobs after this period of self-improvement, I can't shake the fear that AI will make many of my skills obsolete, particularly in frontend development. I've spoken with a friend who's in cybersecurity and feels more secure in his role. I'm wondering what your take is on this—should I delve deeper into cybersecurity or cloud technologies? Should I focus on backend development, or perhaps even switch to AI? I'm just not sure what direction to take. I've had some interviews but didn't perform well in the first one, which added to my stress. Any advice or insights from those who've navigated similar challenges would mean a lot!

If you’re worried about AI's impact, maybe start broadening your skill set. Explore AI fundamentals or even cybersecurity's intersection with AI. Many believe cybersecurity will be one of the last bastions untouched by AI automation, at least for now. If you find that area interesting, it could be worth pursuing alongside your current interests.

I’ve been thinking the same—cybersecurity has that additional layer that AI might struggle to penetrate. Combining those skills will definitely give you an edge!

The landscape is changing fast, no doubt, but don’t lose hope! Frontend development might not disappear entirely—it’ll just evolve. There will always be a need for creative minds who can bridge tech with human experience. Focus on what you love and keep adapting to new tools, and you’ll find your path. Just stay versatile and before you know it, you’ll carve a niche for yourself in whatever field you choose!

Exactly! Passion fuels innovation. Even if some tasks become automated, human expertise and creativity will always be needed.

It's tough to predict how things will play out with AI, but combination roles are likely to be the safest for a while. Cybersecurity seems like a solid field since it requires a unique blend of skills that AI isn’t quite ready to replace. I’d recommend honing your skills in that area. However, don't neglect what you enjoy—if backend development excites you, pursue it! The tech scene is about adaptability; keeping up with trends, especially AI tools, will enhance your value. Remember, staying curious and passionate about what you do will always serve you well in the long run!

Totally agree! Balancing your interests with market needs is key. Plus, diving into AI topics might empower your backend skills too! No harm in learning a bit of everything.

You should definitely keep learning about AI tools and how they can assist in your current job or future roles! Since you’re already using AI in your work, consider how you can integrate this into your projects to make yourself stand out during interviews. Just make sure you also have a solid grasp of the fundamentals—those technical skills will always be a plus in any job search.

Right! AI can enhance your coding process significantly. It's about leveraging the tech to your advantage while still focusing on your core programming skills.
