Navigating the Struggles of First-Year Computer Science Studies

Hey everyone! I'm a first-year student studying computer and data science, and I'm feeling overwhelmed. I've started a problem-solving course using C++, but I find it really challenging. Though I understand code and can write it, the syntax and algorithms are tough for me. This is my first experience with coding and computer science, and I feel a lot of pressure because I want to do well in college and other training programs, especially with my GPA. I'm looking for advice on how to cope with these struggles. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Have you considered starting from the basics? It might help to go back to a C++ programming book and tackle the syntax step by step. Work on small tasks like simple input/output problems before jumping into the more challenging stuff. You could also try writing pseudocode first for algorithms; this can often simplify your thought process. It took me a while to get the hang of things too, so don’t rush it!

I thought of dropping the course since it's tough, but I really want this opportunity for ICPC training. Any ideas on what to do?

First off, remember that feeling overwhelmed is normal, especially in your first year! Learning to code takes time and effort, and it's okay to struggle. The best advice I can give you is to keep practicing. There are no shortcuts; it’s all about persistence. If you have to retake courses or struggle in the beginning, don’t sweat it—many people do, and you will get through it! Just be patient with yourself.
