I've been using a refurbished 2019 MacBook Pro for video editing with 32GB of RAM and an i9-9980HK, but it's been throttling and not performing well. Now, I'm ready to build a new PC for 4K video editing and mid-level gaming. I want to make sure I'm not overdoing it with parts like the 9950X3D and 5090. Given that I want this build to last for 5 years and I'm willing to invest around $4000, what would you guys recommend for components? Also, I'm curious if I should consider custom loop cooling since I'm apprehensive about heat management. Any insights would be great!

I think you're overthinking things a bit! The 5090 and 9950X3D feel like overkill for your needs. You could easily build a solid system for less that will still last 5-7 years without needing to upgrade immediately. I’d suggest looking at something like a 5070 Ti or 6070 XT paired with a 7800X. Make sure to get plenty of storage too—these AAA games are hefty!
Thanks for the advice! I like the idea of getting a more balanced setup.
You really don’t need all the bells and whistles like custom legs or airflow from AC; it sounds cool but can be unnecessary. Just focus on solid components with good cooling solutions. Also, keep in mind the noise levels from fans, some can be louder than you'd expect!
Honestly, water cooling feels excessive for most setups. A decent air cooler should do just fine unless you're planning for heavy overclocking. Plus, the 5090 can get really loud, which might not be enjoyable for long editing sessions.
I've been nervous about heat, so I'm tempted to go for better cooling. What do you think is a good max temp for these CPUs?
Your concerns about cooling are valid! But decent airflow and a quality cooler are usually enough without going overboard.
Totally agree! I get the appeal of high-end gear, but it’s smart to start with something that suits your actual needs.
