Hey folks! I've recently been dealing with a failing laptop due to GPU errors and decided it's time to build a new desktop. My old setup is completely outdated, so I'm starting from scratch. I have 32GB of DDR4 RAM at 3600MHz that I'd really like to use in my new build to save on costs since switching to DDR5 could get pricey. I'm open to considering DDR5 if it truly offers substantial benefits, but it would require me to revise my planned build.
For some context, here are my main goals:
- I want a quiet machine.
- RGB lighting is a no-go for me, even though I'll have it on the RAM.
- I need a Windows setup.
- The main tasks will involve gaming, as well as work in Blender and Illustrator.
I've linked my current build plans for reference, and here are the specific things I'm curious about:
1. Does my CPU/GPU/motherboard combo fit well with my 5K 240Hz monitor?
2. Are there compatibility issues I might not have noticed?
3. Any suggestions for changes to enhance future-proofing or performance while keeping DDR4?
4. Recommendations for better cooling solutions to keep noise down?
Thanks for any help or suggestions you have!

Your CPU/GPU setup seems fine for that 5K 240Hz monitor. However, I’d recommend you bump up your PSU from 850W to at least 1000W for extra safety with those specs. You can get a good one for the same price; check out the MSI MAG A1000GL, it's fully modular and well-rated.
Hey! I see you're looking to save costs on your build by reusing DDR4, but you’ve picked some expensive components like the 14900K and a Z-series motherboard. A B-tier motherboard could meet your needs just fine, and you might want to consider going with an AMD setup, especially since you're fine with DDR4. It'll save you some cash while still providing solid performance.
Thanks for your input! I appreciate that suggestion, I’ll look into AMD options.
If you're worried about future-proofing, your current GPU choice might need some reconsidering. The 5080 is potentially facing supply issues, so grabbing an SSD now could be a good move as prices are going up fast. Also, consider going for a lower-end CPU, like the 12600K, since higher-end CPUs like the 14900K can be power-hungry and a bit tricky to cool effectively. Just a thought for when the next-gen chips hit the market soon!

Good to know! Thanks for the advice on the PSU, I’ll definitely consider that.
