I tried adding a spare RAM stick to a friend's computer. When we powered it on, the PC produced a continuous beep, so we immediately shut it down. We removed the added stick and tried starting the computer again, but the constant beep remained. The computer does not boot or display anything. What should we check or try next?

That sounds like a motherboard diagnostic beep rather than an actual ringing sound. Turn the PC off, unplug it, and remove all RAM. Then reinstall the original stick carefully until both retention clips lock into place. If there are multiple slots, check the motherboard manual for the recommended slot. Also make sure the added stick is compatible with the motherboard and the existing RAM.
Avoid repeatedly powering it on while the memory is loose. Check that the RAM is the correct type and speed—such as DDR4 versus DDR5—and that it is fully seated. If the PC still gives a continuous beep with the original stick installed alone, inspect the slot and contacts for damage and consider testing that RAM in another compatible system.
Clear the CMOS after shutting the system down and disconnecting power. You can use the motherboard’s clear-CMOS jumper or remove the coin-cell battery for a few minutes, depending on the board’s instructions. Then install just one known-working RAM stick and try again. The exact beep pattern can also identify the problem, so look up the motherboard or BIOS beep codes.

Since the beep continues even after removing the new stick, the original RAM may have been loosened during installation. Try booting with only the known-good original stick, then test each stick and slot separately.
