Power Outage During BIOS Update—What Are My Options?

I recently attempted a BIOS update on my ASUS Zenbook S14 laptop when the power unexpectedly went out. After that, the laptop was stuck on a black screen. I tried restarting it, but now I just see a black screen where the keyboard lights flash and the fan spins occasionally. I've tried using a BIOS update on a USB drive, but nothing appears on the screen. Is there any way to salvage my laptop, or am I completely out of luck?

Unfortunately, it sounds like you might be in a tough spot. Unless you know someone who can replace the BIOS chip from a similar laptop, you’ve got a couple of other options. You could file an RMA request, but there's a chance it might not be approved due to user error. If that doesn't work out, consider selling it for parts at a local repair shop. You can still get some cash back that way.

It’s likely the motherboard is bricked. This is exactly why you’re advised against turning off your device during a BIOS update! If you're working with newer hardware, look for a BIOS flashback feature, which might help you recover without needing to be powered on. Otherwise, you might just need a new BIOS chip or motherboard.

If you want to try a fix, check your laptop's official site for the latest BIOS update. Download it, extract it to a FAT32 formatted USB, then connect your laptop to power. Insert the USB and turn on the laptop; let it run for about three minutes to see if it automatically starts the update.

Try disconnecting all the components from your laptop—remove the SSD, HDD, RAM, battery, and even the CMOS battery. Leave it disconnected for around a day, then reconnect everything and see if that helps.
