Questions About Windows Server 2025 Licensing and Activation

I recently bought a Windows Server 2025 Standard license and downgraded it to 2019 using an ISO installation. However, I couldn't activate it because it required a local KMS server. I'm trying to learn more about Windows licensing, and I hear that using a volume license is common now. A friend suggested that I could find a retail or OEM version for 2025 at Microcenter, which might allow for online activation without needing a KMS server. Is that true? Also, does Windows Server 2025 have downgrade rights to 2019?

Just keep in mind that when you buy a retail or OEM key, it usually allows for online activation, so that could simplify things for you. But make sure your license truly includes the downgrade rights.

For downgrade rights, you’re responsible for having the installation media and keys yourself. MS just cares that you hold an active license, so good proof of purchase is key!
