I'm getting my iPhone 14 Pro Max serviced for a battery replacement since its health is at 78% after four years, and the battery life has really gone downhill lately. I have some questions before I send it in. First off, I know I should back up my phone, but I only have 5GB of iCloud storage and no Mac. I used the Apple Devices app on my Windows PC—will this backup be enough? What happens if there's a mix-up and my phone gets erased or replaced? Secondly, I don't have the original receipt since I won the phone in a giveaway. Will they still service it? Thirdly, besides changing the battery, how can I make my phone feel brand new? It overheats while watching videos or gaming, and the touch screen often registers ghost touches. Lastly, what else do I need to prepare for the service?

For peace of mind, I always back up to iCloud before servicing. It's only $0.99 for a month, and it really simplifies the process. I also wipe my device and set it up without my Apple ID beforehand to protect my info. When you're picking up the device, restoring from iCloud is quick and easy, too!
Definitely back up your phone! If you're not willing to pay for iCloud, just make sure that the manual backup to your Windows PC using the Apple Devices app does the job. It should be fine, especially for a battery swap, but always good to have a backup. Your performance issues might improve with a new battery, but keeping it backed up is crucial just in case something unexpected happens.
From my experience with iPhone services, make sure you know your Apple ID password to disable Find My iPhone. If you have a screen protector on your device, they'll remove it for the service. Sometimes, you might even get a complimentary screen protector back, but it’s not guaranteed. As for the backup, while it's not usually necessary for a battery replacement, good to be prepared, just in case. I had a situation where they ended up replacing the whole phone!
