This morning I found an email saying that I ordered a laptop and AirPods for pickup at a store far away from me. I didn't click on any links, which was a smart move. I checked my Apple Store account linked to my Apple ID, and there were only my past orders. There were no charges on my cards, as they're all in Apple Pay, so I locked all my cards except for one that I needed for important transactions today. Out of curiosity, I checked the Apple website (without signing into my Apple ID) and found the order listed there, which made me think it wasn't just a phishing scam. I contacted official support, and they ended up canceling the order. The order had a real name and address but was meant for pickup about an hour and a half away from me. I'm wondering what kind of scam this could be since I only changed my Apple ID password. It seems like all they had was my email. Wouldn't Apple take payment at pickup? What other protective steps should I consider? Also, just a note: my email has my last name, which is quite rare, so it's unlikely this was a case of mistaken identity. Any advice would be appreciated!

Honestly, just ignore it. Many people get these random order emails as part of scams. They might try to get you to contact them or click suspicious links. Since you already contacted Apple and confirmed it was cancelled, you're good!
There are a lot of scams going around where they use similar emails to trick you. They could have just typed in the wrong address for notifications, and since that's separate from your Apple account, it doesn't show up as a real order on your end. Just stay vigilant and keep checking your accounts!
It sounds like you might have encountered a phishing scam or maybe someone mistakenly used your email for their order. These scams often send fake emails to get you to click on links that lead to non-Apple sites designed to fish for your personal information. Just be careful with any links in emails and confirm anything through official channels.
I really doubt it was a typo since my last name is not common at all. It seems more deliberate.
