Recommendations for Upgrading My Son’s Gaming PC

I'm looking to upgrade my son's PC as a Christmas gift. He built it in 2022 using a Ryzen 5 5600X and a 6750XT GPU, and he's been really happy with it. We mostly play games like No Man's Sky. I'd like to upgrade the CPU along with a new motherboard, maybe even considering the Ryzen 7 7700X. My work buddy suggested that if I don't go for an X3D CPU, it won't be worth the money. Is that true? Also, will I need new RAM for this upgrade? I'm on a budget and want to start the upgrade process in time for his birthday at the end of January. Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

A couple of things to keep in mind:
- If you're looking to upgrade from the 5600X, the only worthwhile options are on the AM5 platform. That means a completely new CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 RAM. Currently, DDR5 prices are really high due to increased demand, so be ready for a cost there, too.
- The 7700X is a great consideration. However, if you're set on going AMD X3D, the older AM4 options are extremely inflated in price since they're not in production anymore.
- X3D CPUs have a unique stacked L3 cache that really helps with gaming performance, so they are pretty crucial for a gaming rig. Non-X3D models won’t be as impactful for gaming, so keep that in mind when deciding!
- Upgrading to AM5 means you'll need to dig deeper into your wallet with RAM prices skyrocketing, but it can boost performance tremendously if you're ready to invest!

Thanks for breaking that down! I'll think about the X3D options but wait on the RAM for now. Planning the CPU and mobo upgrade for Christmas sounds good!
