I'm putting together a new gaming PC with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and plan to play at 1440p using maximum settings. I'm not interested in ray tracing or path tracing, but I do play competitive games, so consistent frame times and good 1% lows matter to me. The RX 9070 XT is considerably cheaper, but I've seen reports of micro-stutters, black screens, driver timeouts, and crashes. I'd appreciate advice from people who have used either card, especially regarding reliability and competitive gaming. How much extra would you consider reasonable for the RTX 5070 Ti?

The RTX 5070 Ti makes more sense if you value DLSS, frame generation, Reflex, CUDA, video-encoding features, or stronger ray and path-tracing performance. Its upscaling support is also broader, and DLSS can have a small image-quality advantage over FSR in some games. For competitive titles, though, frame generation usually isn’t desirable because it can increase latency, so those features may not benefit you much.
Both cards are capable choices and neither is guaranteed to be trouble-free. Nvidia also has occasional driver, black-screen, and crash problems. For your 7800X3D system and 1440p maximum-settings gaming without RT or CUDA, I’d buy whichever has the better local price, with the RX 9070 XT as the default choice unless the 5070 Ti is very close in cost.
The RX 9070 XT can handle ray tracing at 1440p reasonably well, although the 5070 Ti is faster there. Its main weakness is path tracing, which you said you don’t care about. FSR 4 can also help in supported DirectX games if you need more performance, but support is not as widespread as DLSS and it doesn’t cover every graphics API.
I had some stuttering during the first few days, but updating the motherboard BIOS, reinstalling the graphics software cleanly, and removing a problematic Windows update fixed it. It has been stable since.
Price should decide this more than brand loyalty. If the 5070 Ti is only about $50–$100 more, paying the premium for Nvidia’s feature set can be reasonable. If the difference is around $150–$200 or more, the RX 9070 XT is usually the stronger value for your stated use case. A much larger gap is difficult to justify when you mainly want rasterized 1440p performance.
If you don’t need CUDA, heavy ray tracing, or path tracing, the RX 9070 XT is generally the better value. It delivers very similar rasterized performance at 1440p and is often substantially cheaper. The reliability complaints appear to be overrepresented online; plenty of owners run the card without issues. Make sure the BIOS, chipset drivers, graphics drivers, and Windows installation are up to date, since unstable RAM or outdated firmware can also look like a GPU problem.
I’m pairing mine with a 7800X3D and have only had one driver-related problem, which was fixed with a later update. I haven’t experienced recurring micro-stutters.

For competitive games, the 7800X3D is already a strong foundation. I’d prioritize native or upscaled rendering with consistent latency rather than frame generation.
