I currently have one 16GB DDR5 memory stick in my home gaming PC. A new 32GB kit is extremely expensive where I live—almost as much as a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and more than some 16GB graphics cards—so buying a complete kit is not realistic. Would buying another 16GB stick with matching speed and timings be worthwhile, or would the performance improvement be too small to justify the cost?

I made the same upgrade from one 16GB DDR5 stick to two and the overall improvement was modest. Some games benefited clearly, while others barely changed, especially when the graphics card was the bottleneck at higher resolutions. If your games already run smoothly and your memory usage stays well below 16GB, additional SSD storage or another upgrade may provide more noticeable value.
Adding a second 16GB stick should work and will let the system use a two-stick memory configuration, which can improve gaming performance and especially frame-time consistency. Try to match the capacity, speed, timings, and voltage of your current stick as closely as possible. Ideally, buy the same model, although even matching kits can sometimes contain different memory chips between production batches.
If you are regularly running out of memory, adding another stick is definitely preferable to relying on the SSD as swap space. For a new gaming system, 32GB is a comfortable target, but there is no need to upgrade just because it is considered standard. Buy the second stick if you are seeing stutters, high memory usage, or want the extra headroom—and make sure your motherboard supports the resulting memory speed.
The benefit depends heavily on the games and your current memory usage. Some games may gain very little, while CPU-limited titles can see a noticeable improvement, sometimes around 10–20% with larger gains in particular cases. Better 1% lows and less stuttering can matter more than the average frame-rate increase. Check Task Manager while gaming, but remember that even if 16GB is not completely full, running one stick can still limit memory bandwidth.
Matching the advertised specifications is usually enough. You generally cannot confirm the exact memory chips before buying, and the system may still run fine if the chips differ slightly; you might just need to lower the speed or adjust settings if the sticks are unstable.
