Should I choose a Ryzen 5 8500G or an Intel Core Ultra 7 255U for a basic PC build?

My mom wants a new PC, and she found this HP all-in-one model. However, I think I could build her a cheaper option. The HP comes with an Intel Core Ultra 7 255U, while my build includes a Ryzen 5 8500G. The Ryzen has a higher base clock and 14 threads compared to the Intel's 12 threads, but I don't have much info to compare their performances directly. Her needs are pretty basic—just checking emails—and my brother will be using it for Roblox until I pass down my old PC. Does anyone have experience with these CPUs? I could also use an Ryzen 7 8700G, which would still be cheaper than the HP setup.

I'd recommend going with your build. For your mom's needs, the all-in-one is overpriced and proprietary. Your custom build is a better option and upgradeable in the future. Just pair it with a decent monitor, and you should stay around $800. Just keep in mind that some folks prefer the aesthetics of an all-in-one without a bulky tower on their desk.

Lol, I get your point about threads! But seriously, the Ryzen 5 8500G will perform better since it’s not power-limited like the Intel. Just a heads up, though—be careful with the power supply you’ve chosen; I’d check out a PSU tier list to avoid issues.

A Ryzen 5 8500G build is overkill for what your mom needs, and it should serve her well for many years. If you're looking for a super budget option, you could find a used Dell Optiplex with an i5-8400 for under $150. Just adding an SSD to that could get you a solid office PC for under $300.

The Ryzen CPU is definitely the better choice here. Just remember that while the Intel has 10 efficiency cores, the Ryzen sports 6 performance cores, making it potentially more capable for your mom's tasks.
