I'm looking to upgrade my storage, but I'm stuck with a single M.2 slot on my Phantom Gaming 4 B460 motherboard, which is already occupied by a 1TB SSD. My main concern is balancing value—price, performance, and capacity—while considering my usage for open world gaming and multitasking. I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether I should go for a SATA SSD or an M.2 NVMe with an adapter. Also, if there are other solutions I should think about, let me know! Just a heads up, my RAM is currently capped at 2666Hz, but I plan to upgrade that later, possibly adding more M.2 slots down the line. Thanks in advance!

I'd definitely recommend going with an NVMe SSD using a PCI-E adapter. It's much easier to upgrade in the future, and since the price difference between SATA and NVMe drives isn't significant right now, it makes sense to opt for the faster option. You'll benefit from better performance, and with future-proofing in mind, this is the way to go!
That's great to know! But is there a noticeable performance gap for gaming between the two? And does using an adapter affect the SSD's performance?
