Should I Choose AM4 or Upgrade to AM5 for My First Build?

I'm building my first PC and I'm trying to decide between an AM4 build or a slightly pricier AM5 setup that's about $120 more. Here's the breakdown:
- AM4 Build: around $905 after tax
- AM5 Build: about $1040 after tax
I'm planning to use this computer for gaming, schoolwork, and research, on a 1080p, 200Hz monitor. The games I'm interested in include GTA V, RDR2, Minecraft, Fortnite, and Roblox, plus a few indie titles. I'll be using an RX 6600 GPU for both builds since it's a well-reviewed option under $300 that also fits my aesthetic preferences.
Many say AM5 is more future-proof, but I read reports that AMD may stop supporting it around 2027, which makes me question if it's worth the investment. I'm also concerned about my budget being over $1000, so any suggestions for solid, budget-conscious alternatives would be appreciated!

If your budget allows it, definitely go for the AM5. There's just no upgrade path for AM4 at this point, and it's better to invest in a future-proof option if you can swing it.

I'd say get AM5 for sure. You’re already paying a decent amount, so the performance gain justifies the cost. Plus, by the time you need to upgrade, AM5 should still have some legs left.

AM4 was great while it lasted, but it's really a dead platform now. If you're planning to spend this much, AM5 is the way to go. It might be worth spending a little more now for a significant upgrade down the line.

Honestly, I wouldn't choose AM4 anymore. It's time for it to retire, especially if you're spending over $700 on a build. Go with AM5 and enjoy the benefits!

For a budget option, yeah, go AM5. But make sure to look into combos for savings or even consider used parts if you're comfortable. Just get a good PSU, because you don't want to skimp on that.
