I'm trying to decide on a CPU for gaming. I initially thought that 8 cores would be sufficient, but now I'm second-guessing myself. Would it be better to go with 8 cores or 16 cores?

For gaming, 8 cores are usually enough. The current best gaming CPU out there, the 9800X3D, only has 8 cores. So if you're mainly gaming, you should be fine with that setup.
While many newer games are utilizing more than 8 cores, it's not just about how many cores you have. Factors like cache size, single-core performance, and overall architecture make a big difference. The 9800X3D and 7800X3D are fantastic for gamers, but if you're into video editing or heavy multitasking, then a CPU with more cores might be the way to go.
Eight cores are definitely plenty! My 10700K is still keeping up well with recent games, so I wouldn’t worry too much about needing 16 cores just for gaming.
