I'm putting together a new gaming PC and deciding between two bundle options: the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The 9800X3D costs more than $200 extra, and I'm wondering whether the performance difference is large enough to justify that price. I'm pairing the CPU with an RX 9070 XT and currently play at 1080p, although I'd like to upgrade to a 1440p monitor soon. If I choose the 9800X3D, I'll have to delay that monitor upgrade, while choosing the 7800X3D would leave money available for a better display. Is the newer CPU worth prioritizing, or would the monitor upgrade make a bigger difference?

At that price difference, the 9800X3D usually isn’t the best value for this build. The performance gap depends on the game, resolution, and frame-rate target, but with an RX 9070 XT, the GPU and monitor will generally matter more. Assuming the bundle motherboards and other parts are reasonably similar, the 7800X3D is the sensible choice.
Check benchmarks for the specific games you play, especially if you’re interested in competitive gaming at very high refresh rates. In most regular gaming situations, though, the 7800X3D plus a 1440p display will feel like a more balanced and enjoyable setup than a 9800X3D paired with a 1080p monitor. The 9800X3D makes more sense if you get it at a small premium or plan to pair it with a much faster GPU later.
I recently built a system with the 9800X3D, and unless the price difference is small, I doubt most people would notice the improvement in everyday gaming. I’d only pay extra if the budget allows it comfortably or if you specifically need maximum CPU-limited frame rates.
Go with the 7800X3D and put the extra money toward the 1440p monitor. The RX 9070 XT is much better suited to 1440p, and moving up from 1080p will be a noticeably bigger improvement than spending over $200 for the newer CPU. The 7800X3D should already provide excellent gaming performance unless you’re targeting extremely high refresh rates or using a top-tier graphics card.
The only notable bundle difference is that the 9800X3D comes with a somewhat better X870 board, but it isn’t a particularly high-end model. That still doesn’t seem worth delaying the monitor upgrade.
