Should I choose the RTX 5070 or RX 9070 XT for gaming, Blender, and local AI?

This will be my first PC with a dedicated graphics card. The system will mainly be used for gaming, along with casual Blender experiments and running smaller AI models locally. I can get an RTX 5070 for about $630 or an RX 9070 XT for around $670.

The RX 9070 XT offers considerably more rasterization performance and VRAM, which seems better for 1440p gaming and potentially larger AI models. However, I understand that NVIDIA generally has stronger support in Blender, better software compatibility, and more mature tools for AI, image generation, and video work.

The RTX 5070 has weaker gaming performance and less VRAM, but it benefits from DLSS, stronger ray tracing, and better integration with many productivity applications. I am unsure whether the 9070 XT's gaming advantage will be noticeable in practice, or whether the 5070's software advantages would matter more for occasional Blender and AI use.

My gaming targets are roughly 1440p at 240 FPS or more in lighter games, 144 FPS or more in mid-range titles, and around 60 FPS in demanding games, preferably with higher settings. I am coming from integrated graphics, so either card would be a major improvement. I also expect to keep the card for roughly four to seven years and probably will not upgrade soon. Is the RX 9070 XT still usable for Blender and local AI, or would the RTX 5070 be the safer all-around choice?

At these prices, the RX 9070 XT is in a completely higher gaming-performance class than the RTX 5070. It should provide a more consistent 1440p experience and has enough VRAM to age better, especially if you plan to keep it for several years. The 5070 makes more sense if Blender, AI image or video generation, and other CUDA-oriented software are important parts of your routine rather than occasional experiments.

That makes sense. I can accept weaker productivity performance if the 9070 XT is still perfectly usable for casual Blender and AI work. Coming from integrated graphics, either card should be a huge upgrade.

For local language models, the extra VRAM on the 9070 XT is meaningful. At this capacity level, even a few additional gigabytes can let you use better quantization, larger models, or a higher context size. AMD can run local models, but you may need more troubleshooting and should verify that the specific software supports your card before buying.

The best choice depends on which compromise will annoy you less. Pick the 5070 if you want the smoother, more predictable experience in Blender and AI applications. Pick the 9070 XT if gaming performance, VRAM, and long-term value matter more. Since your creative and AI use sounds casual and your gaming targets are ambitious, the 9070 XT seems like the stronger overall fit.

The RTX 5070 has advantages in ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, and application support, but those benefits do not erase the large rasterization gap here. It is also limited by its lower VRAM capacity.
