My current graphics card is an RTX 3070, and I mainly play multiplayer games at 1440p. I also occasionally play single-player games on a 4K TV, including upcoming titles and games like Final Fantasy XVI and Rebirth. The RTX 5080 costs about $250 more than the RTX 5070 Ti where I live, and I'll need to replace my five-year-old 650W power supply either way, so PSU cost doesn't affect the comparison. I'm somewhat concerned that both cards have 16GB of VRAM and may not age well, but I've decided not to keep waiting for future releases. Is the RTX 5080 worth the extra money, or would the RTX 5070 Ti be the better match for my Ryzen 7 5800X3D?

It may also be worth checking the price of the Radeon 9070 XT in your area. If it costs around $800, it can offer very strong value compared with the 5080, unless you specifically need Nvidia features such as DLSS, CUDA, or particular ray-tracing performance. Overclocking can narrow the gap between the 5070 Ti and 5080, but the 5080 can be overclocked too, so it won’t completely erase the difference.
The 5070 Ti is the sensible value option. Both cards are strong 1440p GPUs, and features such as DLSS can help extend their useful lifespan as games become more demanding. There’s no truly future-proof graphics card, so if the extra $250 would be better spent elsewhere, the 5070 Ti should serve you well.
For mostly 1440p gaming, the RTX 5070 Ti is already more than enough and should run that resolution very comfortably. It can handle 4K as well, though the RTX 5080 is the better choice if you want demanding single-player games at high settings with ray tracing. The 5080 is roughly 10–15% faster in raw performance, so the decision comes down to whether that extra performance is worth $250 to you.
I’d lean toward the RTX 5080 at that price difference. It should deliver excellent 1440p performance while giving you more headroom for 4K gaming on the TV. The 5800X3D may limit either card in some 1440p games, but at 4K the workload shifts more toward the GPU, making the 5080’s extra performance more useful.
I initially dismissed that option because I was focused on the two Nvidia cards, but the 9070 XT is priced surprisingly well here. It may be worth comparing directly with the RTX 5080.
