I'm trying to decide between two gaming CPUs: the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which I found for €420 on Amazon, and the Ryzen 7 9800X3D for €550. Is the extra €130 worth it for the 9800X3D, or should I just stick with the 7800X3D?

If you want peak performance, go for the 9800X3D no question. You're investing in newer tech, and as firmware improves, it’ll only get better. It all comes down to whether you want the absolute best performance or just a standout value.
From what I’ve read, the 9800X3D offers about 14% better performance in gaming over the 7800X3D according to some tests. But keep in mind, these tests usually run at lower resolutions to avoid GPU bottlenecking. If you’ve got the budget, the 9800X3D is a solid choice, but really, the 7800X3D is more logical for most.
The main differences are more cores and threads, plus a boost in clock speeds with the 9800X3D. It has a better IPC as well, but they're both 8C/16T CPUs at heart.
Exactly, the 9000 series has a bit of an edge on instructions per clock and overall speed.
If you're looking to save some cash, I'd recommend going for the 7800X3D. Unless you're diving into extremely CPU-intensive games or really need overclocking support, the price difference might not be justified. You might want to invest that extra money into a better GPU instead!
My GPU is a 9070 XT, so I think it's quite decent for gaming. I'm mainly focused on getting good performance for both 1440p single-player games and 1080p competitive gaming.
You need to consider your gaming resolution, the specific games you're playing, and your GPU. The 9800X3D is technically the better CPU, but whether it’s worth the €130 really depends on your setup. Keep in mind that at 1440p gaming, especially with anything below an RTX 4090, the GPU might limit your performance more than the CPU will. On the other hand, if you’re going for 1080p with a powerful GPU, the 7800X3D still gives you great FPS.
Really appreciate that insight! Looking to balance my performance for both 1440p and 1080p.
Honestly, stick with your budget and choose the 7800X3D. I own a 9800X3D myself, but I bought it without caring about the price. If you’re concerned about money, using that savings to get a better GPU or even a solid PSU would be a better move.
I’ve got a 9070 XT and an 850W PSU, so I think I’m good there!
Thanks a ton for your input!
