Should I Choose Video Game Development or Software Engineering for My Master’s?

I'm a 22-year-old computer science student in my third year of a five-year master's program. My university only offers a master's degree, which means I'm diving into specialized topics after the first three years of general computer science education, covering things like software engineering, web development, and programming languages. I'm weighing my options between specializing in video game development and software engineering.

On one hand, I feel drawn to video game development because I might genuinely enjoy creating games, unlike traditional software which doesn't excite me. However, I also realize that software engineering might provide more job opportunities, especially considering I'm looking to immigrate after graduation. I've noticed that many graduates from my program secure jobs outside their specialization anyway, so there's a chance I could still land a software engineering role even if I choose gaming. Given that my main goal is immigration and finding a job abroad, I'm seeking your advice on whether I should follow my interest in gaming or play it safe with software engineering.

I’d recommend thinking carefully about this. If you’re not sure video game development is your ultimate goal, it might be wiser to stick with software engineering for more job security. A lot of folks graduate in game dev but struggle to find stable jobs. You could always pivot to gaming later once you’ve secured a position in a more stable area.
