Should I Format My HDD When Resetting My PC After Possible Malware Infection?

I recently ran a questionable program that might have had malware, affecting both my external HDD (D drive) and SSD (C drive). A previous scan detected a Trojan on the SSD, and another scan found similar malware on the HDD. My D drive only holds video files created through gaming software. I'm worried about whether these files might be infected and could reinfect my PC after I clean it. I'm set to reinstall Windows on my C drive, but I'm uncertain if I need to format my D drive or if just running scans with Malwarebytes and Defender will suffice to clean it. Is it safe to keep the video files, or should I just format the drive?

Don't panic! Data files like videos are generally not infected. Malware usually targets executables or system files, so your clips are likely safe. Just to be sure, run a complete scan on those files before you decide to move them back after cleaning your system.

It's usually a safer bet to start fresh if you've had a malware issue. Formatting the D drive and reinstalling Windows will ensure that everything is clean. If you really need to keep those video files, consider transferring them to a safe backup first, but be aware that files can sometimes carry hidden threats. Just make sure you scan everything thoroughly before moving them back to your PC.
