What’s Causing My Laptop’s CPU to Hit 100%?

I recently got my father's old gaming laptop, an Asus Dash F15, but I'm having some performance issues. It barely has any storage space left—only about 50 GB free on the SSD after managing to install Fortnite. However, even just launching Epic Games causes the CPU to spike to 100%, and it takes about 10 minutes to restart. I've made some tweaks but nothing seems to help. Does anyone have suggestions for fixing these issues? Thank you in advance!

In addition to a fresh install, it’s possible your dad never cleaned out the laptop. Dust can really affect cooling and performance, so maybe give it a good clean inside.

Sounds like a good idea to do a clean installation of Windows 11. It’ll help clear out any underlying issues and reset everything. You can use the Windows Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB drive. Just remember to download the Wi-Fi drivers from the manufacturer's website and save them on the USB to avoid internet issues after the reinstall. Good luck with it!

Ill try this thank you!

It's crucial not to run an SSD that's nearly full. Ideally, you want to keep at least 10-15% free for optimal performance. You can either reinstall Windows or go through the programs and uninstall anything unnecessary. Alternatively, consider getting an external SSD for more storage—it can help with space issues while still allowing you to play your games!

Check your BIOS settings! You might want to limit the CPU performance to see if that stabilizes things—it could prevent the CPU from maxing out. Just be careful when changing settings!

How do u go do that exactly?

Starting fresh by wiping the drive is definitely the way to go. A full storage can really slow things down and cause issues with Windows. Just back up any important files and then format your hard drive before reinstalling Windows. Here’s a link that covers a clean install: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsinsider/cleaninstall. Hope it helps!

Thank you ill try this!

Long restart times usually indicate a malfunctioning Windows install. A fresh install from a USB drive should improve this. However, overheating could also be the culprit, which might require cleaning the internals and reapplying thermal paste if that’s an issue. Just keep an eye on the temperatures!
