I'm looking to upgrade my monitor for FPS games like Valorant and CS:GO. Currently, I have a 27-inch ASUS monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080 and a refresh rate of 165Hz. I'm weighing the options between getting a 4K monitor or one with a high refresh rate, as I've seen mixed opinions on which is better. I'd like a resolution of at least 1440p. Given that I have an RTX 4080 Super, I'm curious about whether a 4K monitor is worthwhile, or if a high-refresh setup would be better for competitive gaming. What do you all think?

Honestly, I think a 1440p monitor is the way to go. You get to maintain high FPS and still have decent clarity. Upscaling from 4K could create some visual issues and might not add much clarity at 27 inches.
The choice really depends on your system capabilities. A 240Hz monitor is perfect for games like CS:GO and Valorant. 1440p at 240Hz provides good pixel density and smooth gameplay without the struggle of 4K performance drops.
If you're serious about FPS games, a 240Hz monitor makes a noticeable difference in input lag and responsiveness. A 4K monitor can display 1080p well, but if you're looking for that competitive edge, prioritize high refresh rates.
You can actually adjust scaling in Windows to keep it sharp at 200% instead of dropping to 1080p. That way, visuals stay cleaner.
4K can be tough for FPS games because getting the required frame rates is a challenge for most setups. 1440p is usually the sweet spot for clarity and performance without overdoing it.
You really don't need more than 144Hz for competitive play in FPS games. It's not all about the pixels.
If your budget allows, look into dual mode monitors that can switch between 4K at 160Hz and 1080p at higher refresh rates. That way, you get the best of both worlds for different types of gameplay.
Considering your power setup, I'd recommend going for a 1440p 240Hz. The visuals are significantly better than 1080p, and your RTX 4080 should handle that perfectly. A solid upgrade choice!
Your current setup is good, but if you're looking for a 1440p upgrade, check out the Dell G2725D when it drops to around $140-$160. I got a couple of them myself, and they’re fantastic for both gaming and using with other consoles like the PS5.
Totally agree! I snagged two of these and they've been performing great. The price-to-performance ratio is definitely hard to beat.
That's interesting! But why do you run your 4K monitor at 1080p for work? Can’t you just keep it at 4K for everything?
