Should I go for 64GB DDR4 or 16GB DDR5 for gaming?

I'm considering upgrading my son's old gaming rig, which currently has an Intel i5 processor. He transferred his old GPU and RAM to a new build, and I'm thinking of using his old setup to join my kids in playing games like PUBG and CS2. I'm not too concerned about 4K gaming; I prefer to keep graphics settings low for better FPS.

I have a choice between a GeForce RTX 4070 (12GB) and a cheaper RTX 5060 Ti (16GB) – is the price difference justified for the games I play? On top of that, I have two RAM options available: 2x8GB DDR5 at 4800MHz or 64GB DDR4 at 3600MHz. I just learned that the motherboard only supports DDR5, so I'm leaning towards the 16GB DDR5. Just wanted to confirm if that's the right choice for gaming, especially considering my casual style of play. Sorry if this question feels redundant; I just want to make sure I'm making the right decision!

I'd say 16GB is a bit on the lower side these days, even if you're playing older FPS games. With newer resource-heavy titles coming out, you'll want enough RAM to multitask smoothly—like running Discord or your browser while gaming. Still, for now, 16GB DDR5 will serve you and your kids well for what you're playing!

Ah, good point! I didn’t think about multitasking while gaming. Thanks for the advice!

Your motherboard will determine whether you can use DDR4 or DDR5, and since yours only supports DDR5, you've definitely made the right call there! Just keep in mind that the DDR5 memory you're considering isn't as fast as the newer standards, but it will still perform better than DDR4 overall in most situations for gaming settings. Plus, it helps future-proof your system a bit, which is always a plus!

Haha, I didn’t know that the motherboard could limit my options! Thanks for clarifying. 😀
