Should I Go for a 1TB SSD with Lower Quality or a 500GB SSD with Better Performance?

I'm looking to add a secondary SSD to dual boot Linux on my laptop. I've narrowed it down to two options: the Silicon Power UD90 500GB, which is known for its better quality, and the Patriot P300 1TB, which is around $10 more expensive. After reading a review from Tom's Hardware, it seems like the P300 might not perform as well as the UD90. So, my question is whether I should opt for the lesser quality 1TB SSD or stick with the superior 500GB option. Also, if you have any other recommendations, I'd love to hear them!

Prices can vary where you live, but I suggest checking the Lexar NM710 1TB, especially if it has a good sale right now. For SSDs, access speed is crucial, but most users won’t notice differences in crazy high speeds. Nowadays, I'd always go for at least 1TB since they’re cheap. Future tech will need that space! You're right to consider reliability over speed, especially if you plan on using this laptop for years. For photo and text work, 1-3 Gbps should be more than fine for your needs!

Thanks for the tip! I'm definitely looking for something durable since I don't want to be upgrading soon.

I saw that the Lexar NM710 is on sale and it's cheaper than the P300—would you say it's a better deal?

Given your situation, I’d advise going for the extra space. It's a secondary drive, so even if the performance difference isn’t huge, having more storage is usually more useful, especially with both options being SSDs.

Definitely lean towards the 1TB option!

It really depends on how much data you actually have. If you’re sitting on around 700GB of files, then the 500GB SSD will definitely be too small. If not, the 500GB should work just fine for you. Just think about how much space you realistically need!

The key question here is whether 500GB is enough for what you plan to store on it. If you’re just using it for documents and a few programs, it might be fine, but keep an eye on that space!
