Should I Replace the Thermal Paste on My Old Dell Optiplex 9020 for Better Noise Control?

Hey everyone! I'm thinking about transforming my Dell Optiplex 9020 into a home server. I've already swapped the old hard drive for an SSD, but it's still running a bit noisier than I'd like. Since the machine is around 10 years old, I'm curious if changing out the thermal paste would help reduce the noise level. I assume a fresh application of thermal paste could help with temperatures and potentially make the fan quieter, but I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make. I'm thinking of using Arctic MX-4 for this. What do you think?

Replacing the thermal paste can definitely help! When these older machines were built, they often used pads that degrade over time, so a good thermal paste like Arctic MX-4 could lower temperatures by about 5-10°C or even more. This might be enough to make your fan run quieter. Just keep in mind, if the noise is really coming from the power supply unit (PSU), you might need to replace that instead. Generally, with the right care, these machines can still be pretty quiet.

Yeah, I get that! If it's running a bit loud but not crazy noisy, new thermal paste could help, especially if it has mostly been used for office work. Just check the fan and PSU too, in case they’re the culprits.
