Should I stick with AM4 or upgrade to AM5 now?

I recently picked up a B550M DS3H AC motherboard and an R5 5600X processor, planning to pair them with a 3080 GPU. However, after making my CPU and motherboard purchase, my budget improved, allowing me to get a better GPU, the 5070. Now, I'm contemplating whether to sell my AM4 components for an AM5 motherboard and CPU or just go ahead and buy a new monitor. Would upgrading just the monitor suffice, or is it worth the investment to upgrade my CPU and motherboard too?

It really comes down to your budget. The used AM4 stuff is still awesome! Most gamers are playing titles from the last 2-10 years, and AM4 can handle those just fine. If you’re buying brand new, the price difference might not be worth it for the older hardware.

Yeah, I got the B550M and 5600X brand new for about 250 AUD total, while AM5 setups are at least 200 more!

There's always going to be something newer and better. If you get too caught up in that cycle, you'll spend all your time just buying and selling parts instead of enjoying your games. Why not upgrade your monitor, fire up your favorite game, and just enjoy it?

That is good life advice there - thank you for that.

If you happen to have a Microcenter nearby, they’ve got this AM5 bundle with a 650 and 7600X for around $270. But keep in mind, if you're bottlenecked by your CPU, a monitor upgrade might not have the impact you're hoping for.

Ah no, I live in Australia, so unfortunately no Microcenter for me.

Why not sell the 5600X and put some money towards a 5700X, 5700X3D, or even a 5800X? Those are solid upgrades for the AM4 platform. I moved up to a 5700X from a 3600X, and it should last me for a few years. Honestly, with current games being a bit lackluster, I’m just going to wait for AM6 before I shift to that new AM5 tech.
