Should I Update My Motherboard’s BIOS and Drivers?

I got a new prebuilt gaming PC with an MSI B840 motherboard, an RTX5080 graphics card, and a 9800X3D processor. Games are running smoothly, but I noticed the BIOS version is pretty old—like from 2017. Should I update the BIOS and the drivers right away? What does updating the BIOS actually do? Is it necessary? And when it comes to drivers, which specific ones should I look to update from the MSI website? There seem to be so many options, and it's a bit confusing. Thanks for any advice!

Updating your drivers can definitely help with performance, but don't feel like you have to update the BIOS for the sake of it. If you need a feature or fix, then it's worth considering. Your system's performance should be the priority; maintain what's working well for you, and only update drivers that have direct relevance to your hardware. Just stay on top of your GPU updates, and you’ll be golden!

Great advice! Keeping the BIOS stable is smart if everything’s running smoothly. That's how to avoid any unnecessary risks!

Honestly, if your PC is running just fine, I'd skip the BIOS update for now. The B840 isn't the latest model, but it should work well enough for your setup. Just focus on keeping your NVIDIA drivers updated; you can check with the NVIDIA app on your PC. You don’t need to stress too much about the other drivers unless you encounter issues. Plus, if it came with a bunch of extra software, it might be a good idea to reinstall Windows directly without all that bloat, just to tidy things up a bit!

Updating your BIOS isn't mandatory, especially since your system is stable and performing well. The main reasons to update it would be for fixes related to compatibility, stability, or support for newer hardware. If everything runs smoothly, you can probably hold off on the update for now. Just keep in mind that if you do decide to update the BIOS, there's a small risk involved—if it doesn't go as planned, it could 'brick' the motherboard. As for drivers, prioritize updates for essential ones like chipset, storage, network, and audio, rather than updating everything blind. Those are critical for stability and performance. The GPU drivers should be managed through NVIDIA’s app, not MSI's site. Overall, your PC seems to be in good shape, so just focus on the key updates.

Totally agree! Just make sure to keep your GPU drivers up to date; that's super important for gaming!
